HOW IT BEGAN

HISTORY OF OKACHI CHARITY FOUNDATION

The Okachi Charity Foundation was founded by Faith Morey in honor of her grandmother, Mrs. Charity Okachi, a dedicated public school teacher who served her community for over three decades. Mrs. Okachi’s commitment to education and her tireless efforts to uplift her students left a lasting impact on all who knew her.

Inspired by her grandmother’s legacy, Faith Morey decided to channel her philanthropic efforts into a cause that resonated deeply with her. She announced the creation of the foundation via an Instagram video, revealing that she had been working on this initiative for a considerable time. Her journey began at Sangana Primary School in Port Harcourt, the very school where her grandmother had taught for over 30 years. This connection made the foundation’s name, “Okachi Charity Foundation,” profoundly meaningful to her, as it honored the woman who raised her and inspired her philanthropic spirit.

Reflecting on how to best honor her grandmother, Faith thought of revisiting Sangana Primary School, where her grandmother was not just a teacher but a mother figure to all in their community. Known affectionately as “Big Mama” in Diobu, Mrs. Charity Okachi was renowned for her big heart and immense dedication.

The foundation’s initial focus was on providing solar panels to Sangana Nursery and Primary School. However, upon seeing the school’s dilapidated condition with a falling roof, haphazard renovations, and an uninviting entrance the focus shifted. The students lacked proper uniforms, with some wearing bathroom slippers, which detracted from their confidence and comfort. Recognizing these needs, the foundation postponed the solar panel project and instead addressed the immediate concerns.

They volunteered to fill the gap left by the shortage of teachers in the primary and nursery school by funding the salaries of some new teachers for a year. Additionally, scholarships were provided to students from nursery three to primary five, along with new school uniforms and back-to-school sandals.

Continuing their mission, the foundation is now working on Port Harcourt Primary, their first public school project in Port Harcourt, also located in Diobu where Faith Morey attended. The foundation started by supplying water and renovating the primary school wings and the school’s entrance. As a testament to their impact, the school is honoring the foundation by naming one of its entire sports houses after them.

All these efforts are a tribute to the memory of Mrs. Charity Okachi, ensuring her legacy of dedication, compassion, and service lives on through the Okachi Charity Foundation and the inspired work of her granddaughter, Faith Morey.
