Initial Assessment & Support Launch Orodu Nursery and Primary School – Ajegunle, Lagos

Location: Ajegunle, Lagos

Overview

In line with our commitment to educational equity, Okachi Charity Foundation (OCF) conducted an initial assessment and support visit to Orodu Nursery and Primary School in Ajegunle, Lagos a government-owned school currently squatting within another school’s deteriorating facility due to the complete collapse of its original site. What we found was not just infrastructural decay, but a deep erosion of dignity in uniforms, teachers , water system , toilet , learning & teaching tools.

The school serves 117 pupils, many of whom arrive in worn-out clothes, broken sandals, or none at all. Over 75% lack adequate writing materials, and nearly 60% do not own textbooks and backpack . In overcrowded classrooms where up to four classes are taught simultaneously ; effective teaching is nearly impossible. The conditions do not whisper poverty; they cry out for urgent, coordinated intervention.

OCF’s Initial Response

As a first step in our adoption of this school,is Committed to providing all 108 pupils with new school uniforms, sandals, and socks, learning materials, backpacks, and basic classroom supplies. We recognize that before a child can dream, they must be seen. That begins with restoring their confidence ; dressing them the way they deserve to be addressed.

Learning cannot happen without tools, and certainly not without dignity. If children lack basic items like pencils or exercise books, how can they possibly retain what they’re taught? If their classrooms are chaotic, unsafe, or overcrowded, how can they thrive? And if school looks like a punishment instead of a promise, why would children out of school ever feel inspired to return?

Strategic Commitment (2025–2026)
Our vision is not to patch poverty but to reverse it.
The Orodu project will serve as a cornerstone of our 2025–2026 Infrastructure and Access Program, which includes:
•Full renovation or reconstruction of the school’s abandoned site
•Provision of 5 new classrooms, playground set , functional restrooms
•Equipping of the Pre-Nursery section with age-appropriate learning aids and toys

The Bigger Picture: Why This Matters
Ajegunle is a community with vibrant cultural roots, but it faces deep systemic neglect. Many pupils are orphans or in the care of guardians who cannot afford even a pen or lunchbox. But we know this: when one child sees another walking proudly to school with a new backpack and uniform, it sparks possibility.
It’s not just about school It’s  about being seen, feeling safe, and being told you deserve more. A dignified environment attracts children out of the streets and into classroom. It says: You matter. And we’re investing in your future.

Moving Forward
OCF will continue engaging with stakeholders, mobilizing donors, and calling on government agencies to act. We invite philanthropic partners and like-minded organizations to join us in transforming Orodu Nursery and Primary School into a space of learning, laughter, and legacy.
The children of Ajegunle are not asking for much just the chance to learn in a space that does not strip them of their pride. And we are here to help make that happen.
