Bright Minds Little Hands – Sangana Visit 2025
- by OCF
Location: State School Sangana, Nursery and Primary – Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Purposeful Presence. Long-Term Transformation.
Okachi Charity Foundation (OCF) visited State School Sangana to continue our mission of empowering underserved schools through consistent engagement, educational resources, and infrastructure improvement. This outreach marked another strategic step toward creating sustainable learning environments for early-age learners.
Why We Do What We Do
Each year, OCF distributes learning materials, backpacks, and classroom supplies across its adopted schools because we believe that every child deserves to learn in an environment that inspires confidence and curiosity.
Our focus on nursery-aged children (Nursery 1–3) is intentional. These young learners often lack the attention span for lecture-style instruction. Yet, in most public classrooms, they are given little more than chalk and talk. Through Montessori materials, alphabet blocks, puzzles, and visual charts, we introduce tools that stimulate cognitive engagement, making education both playful and meaningful.
Support Delivered
• Backpacks and complete learning kits for all enrolled pupils, ensuring access to essential school supplies
• Montessori learning aids for the nursery classes, including ABC blocks, charts, and tactile tools for early literacy and motor development
• Reward packs and cash prizes to pupils who excelled in the School Art Competition, encouraging creativity and personal expression
• Teaching materials for volunteer teachers, along with appreciation for their resilience and dedication
Observations & Immediate Needs
During our visit, we observed deeply concerning conditions that threaten both learning and safety. The entire school compound was overrun with six-foot-high grass, which had overtaken classrooms and obscured the playground. Children sitting near windows were visibly uncomfortable due to insects and pests entering through the grass, further disrupting focus and instruction.
Classrooms from Nursery 1 through Primary 6 require urgent renovation. Desks are broken or missing entirely, windows and doors broken
Our Long-Term Commitment
OCF is committed to the full-scale renovation of all classrooms from nursery to primary six. This includes:
• Repainting and structural repairs
• Provision and replacement of desks
• Clearing and maintaining school grounds, including the playground
• Deployment of five additional volunteer teachers by the end of 2025
• Ongoing provision of learning materials and uniforms
We also plan to engage UBEC Port Harcourt and the State Ministry of Education to ensure that our efforts are sustained through joint responsibility integrating government accountability with the care and consistency OCF has come to represent.
Conclusion
From visual learning tools to full-campus renovations, we are creating an ecosystem where children learn, grow, and thrive.
We are not just planting change.
We are cultivating futures.
