In July–August 2025, the Okachi Charity Foundation undertook a complete renovation of State School Sangana in Port Harcourt, transforming a severely deteriorated learning environment into a safe, vibrant, and inspiring space for children to learn, grow, and thrive.

At OCF, we believe that the physical condition of a school is not a secondary concern ; it is a core driver of educational outcomes. Research consistently shows that a well maintained and conducive learning environment can improve student performance by up to 25%. Clean, well-lit, properly ventilated classrooms foster focus and reduce absenteeism. Attractive school grounds also encourage higher community enrollment, as parents are more inclined to send their children to schools that feel safe, dignified, and welcoming.

For many children in underserved communities, school is more than a place for academics it is an escape from challenging home conditions where there may be no toilets, running water, or secure shelter. OCF’s renovation projects are designed to make school a place children want to be: a space that ignites enthusiasm for learning, builds pride, and strengthens the sense of belonging. Renovations also serve as a catalyst for attracting out-of-school children; when communities witness visible improvements and hear about new facilities, enrollment rates rise.

The conditions we found at State School Sangana in July were unacceptable. On the day of our visit, heavy rains poured into classrooms through broken windows. Children were shivering at their desks, their lessons interrupted by water streaming in. In the nursery classrooms, grass and bushes had grown so far into the rooms that they touched the desks. The school grounds were overrun with weeds, and there was no access to running water. It was not simply a matter of aesthetics this was a situation that actively compromised the safety, health, and dignity of the pupils.

Within weeks, OCF mobilized resources to address every urgent need. We repainted all classrooms, repaired and replaced broken desks, installed proper window closures to shield against rain, and engaged a professional gardener to clear the overgrowth from the school grounds. We restored running water to the premises, ensuring that children and staff could maintain hygiene throughout the school day. Bushes and weeds were cleared not only for cleanliness but also to remove potential hiding spots for snakes and other hazards, ensuring a secure perimeter for learning.

The transformation was immediate and tangible. Classrooms became bright, clean, and welcoming. The grounds were open and safe. Children entered their classrooms with smiles, visibly more comfortable and ready to learn. Teachers reported a marked improvement in attentiveness and participation. Within just weeks of completion, enrollment at State School Sangana increased by an estimated 15%, driven by parents’ renewed confidence in the school’s safety and standards.

The renovation of State School Sangana is more than an infrastructural achievement ; it is a testament to what happens when we refuse to accept inadequate learning environments as “normal” for any child. OCF remains committed to creating educational spaces that foster not only academic achievement but also dignity, pride, and joy in learning. For these children, walking into a clean, safe, and beautiful classroom is not just about education it is about hope.
